Osteopathic Training

A British trained osteopath went through a very intense clinically based training. Qualifying with a degree in Osteopathy. The course is a minimum of four years of full time study (five days a week). 

At the end of the course the osteopath has in-depth knowledge of the medical sciences including anatomy, physiology, orthopaedics, rheumatology, diagnostic imaging, neurology and pathology, biomechanics and postural analysis. At the end of the course a thesis is written.

The training involves over 4000 academic hours with a further thousand hours of tutored clinic hours, where the students are responsible for the clinical management of their patients whilst being over-seen by a qualified tutor.

STATUS OF OSTEOPATHY: AROUND THE WORLD

Here is information about the current status of osteopathy in the below mentioned countries. It mentions the qualification and whether there is a governmental osteopathic bill and therefore governmental regulation of the osteopathic profession:

 
United Kingdom (UK) : Qualification: B.Sc. (minimum 4 years full time and 5 years part-time) 4000 hours +1500 hours clinic) + M.A.
(Those qualified before 1992 have a Diploma in Osteopathy (D.O) . Same number of hours of study as B.Sc.)

Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act 2003
United States of America (USA) : Qualification: D.O. (Doctor of Osteopathy)
Governmental Bill: American D.O.s are licensed for the full practice of medicine and surgery in all 50 states. Each State determines the tests and procedures for licensing its osteopathic physicians. The level of osteopathic manipulative skill varies between practitioners.
France, Italy, Spain Training varies in schools: B.Sc. or Diploma in Osteopathy (D.O.)
(4 years full- time (approx 4000 hours); 6 year part time programs)
Belgium; Netherlands: B.Sc. (4 and 5 years full time)
Switzerland: BSc + MA (4 and 5 years full time)
